Fantasy Cricket League 2010

In a sensational finish to the league season, there was a major surprise at the top of the Citylets Fantasy League table as last week’s 10th placed manager James Hilton-Robertson leapfrogged a host of managers into second place thanks to another superb performance from his double point scoring captain, Cedric English.

James’s achievement relegated Barnacle Shaun Barrett into third place and, agonisingly, threw 13 year old Haris Aslam back into fourth place and out of the prize money.

Top of the table, and winner of the mega cash-prize, was under 18 star Nick Martin with a whopping 6433 points.

Martin : Rich beyond his wildest dreams

But before Nick was able to lay claim to the cash there was to be one final controversial twist to the 2010 Fantasy season. Bitter and twisted third placed manager Barrett lodged an appeal against the outcome, citing the 3rd XI match played on Saturday 3rd June between Carlton and Stirling County. The match was abandoned after 18.2 overs of the Stirling innings, after teenager Martin had smashed 91 for his side.  As Martin appeared in both his own Fantasy side and that of Hilton-Robinson, the wily Barrett reckoned he was on a winner by pointing out that the match was declared null and void by East League authorities and should therefore not count for Fantasy points. A spurious appeal perhaps, until one takes into account the fact that the club official hearing the appeal would be none other than the Carlton Fantasy Cricket supremo – Mr S.M. Barrett.

After some hurried closed-doors negotiations with himself, rumours reached Barrett’s ears that Head Coach Gilmour was considering making 30 minute pre-match warm-ups compulsory for all members of the 4th XI in 2011. No-one knows exactly what deals were made but an official statement was released from Fantasy Cricket HQ immediately afterwards, which reads as follows:

“I have considered an appeal from Mr S Barrett arguing that i) the 91 runs scored by N Martin in an abandoned match v Stirling County should not count towards Fantasy points OR ii) the 175 runs that I (sorry, the petitioner) would have scored in the rained off match v Preston Village if it had actually taken place should be counted.

On reflection, I have dismissed my appeal and decided the results should stand. I wish myself better luck for next year.

An amazing last day in the Players’ Rankings saw Habs, who appeared to be in an unassailable position, overtaken by not one, but two players. Last year’s top scorer Cedric English was first to the 1000 point mark courtesy of his magnificent 146 in Aberdeen, but he was then overtaken in the last few minutes of the season when the superb Simon Spry notched an unbeaten 150 at Grange Loan to hit the 1038 mark.

Head Coach Stevie Gilmour tops the fielding ranks for outfielders while the peerless JK wins the wicketkeeping race.
